I'm reading this book right now, and it's scarier than any horror book I've read in a good long time. Like you, I didn't have boys in my family, and was unsure what to expect in learning to raise my little man. My son is ten months old, and I'm glad I'll have time to learn about the schools in my area, and how their programs are run.

I'm only up to the chapter on first grade, and at times I wonder how sensationalized the numbers in the book are. Don't get me wrong, Ms Tyre has convinced me that there is a problem with the educational system that is affecting all children, and boys in particular. However, in order to get one's point across, not to mention sell books, it's not unheard of to manipulate data to make it more vibrant.

If you have a boy, I highly recommend this book. And once your done, talk to anyone who might have insight into the school system in your area. Principals, teachers, and friends with children in school already can tell you how your local scholastic landscape looks, and what you may want to do to help you child's situation. When I was a kid, it seemed like that meant extra help with reading or math. Now it seems like music, art, nature walks and zoos!

Another book I recommend is Richard Louv's "Last Child in the Woods", which talks about the growing disconnect between kids and nature, and things to do to help your kids get hands-on with the great outdoors.

By far, The Dark is Rising series is one of the best fantasy series out there. The movie version, however, was terribly dissapointing.

I agree with you, it was bad. The only semi-decent part I though was when the boyfriend got killed next to her in bed. Tee hee.

I've read many Sparks novels, and can say his new one, although predictable, is his best since The Notebook. It's titled The Lucky One. I suggest reading it, and not listening to it though.
